Jimi Jamison - Photo Manips - |
Note: In some circles, the term "photo manip" carries a certain, ah, adult connotation, and I want to make it clear right off that bat that anyone looking for that kind of thing is going to be sorely disappointed by the content here. I happen to enjoy messing around with existing photographs, sometimes because I get inspired for (or by) something specific and other times just to explore the capabilities of my preferred software for the purpose. (I use the GIMP, if anyone's curious.) The changes I make, however, are most often limited to swapping in a different background or adding brief lyric quotes and the like--I've never tried to alter Jimi himself in a photo. (I mean, what would be the point? You can't exactly improve on perfection...) So what you'll find here is mostly just the electronic version of idle doodling, and I try to give credit where credit is due and links for source images when I have them.

(created May 2006) One of my earliest efforts. View the source image in the C&S Jimi Gallery.

(created October 2006) Another early manip. View the source image in the C&S Survivor Band Gallery.

Animated GIFs
(created May 2006) I had worked a little bit with existing GIF animations before I made this manip, but I think this was one of the first I ever created from scratch. View the source image in the C&S Jimi Gallery; the lyric is quoted from "Give Me The Word" on Survivor's album Reach.
(created August 2006) I made this for a friend to use as her avatar at a forum we both frequented. I found the photo itself via Google (and don't recall where now, sorry).

Lyric Manips
(created July 2006) I made this manip to use as my signature image on the (now-defunct) Chord & Sorcery Message Board. The photo is another Google find (and again, from so long ago that I no longer remember where) and the lyric is of course from "Is This Love" on Survivor's album When Seconds Count.
(created October 2006) A manip I made when I found a color version of a photo from the C&S Jimi Gallery via Google, and made the mental connection between that mischievous smile he's wearing and the "looking for trouble" lyric from "Didn't Know It Was Love" on Survivor's Too Hot To Sleep CD.
(created January 2007) A manip created after downloading an unreleased demo called "Show Me Your Fantasy." (Which, alas, no longer seems to be available for purchase from any of the usual sources.) The lyric is from that demo, and you can view the source image in the C&S Survivor Video Captures Gallery #1.
(created May 2007) I created this manip after downloading another unreleased demo called "Radio Town," which I have unfortunately not seen available to buy since the service called Snocap went by the wayside. The lyric was taken from the demo, and you can view the source image in the C&S Jimi Gallery.
(created November 2007) I made this manip after hearing a WONDERFUL unreleased song (I believe it was penned by Jim Peterik) called "Come Dancin'" on Jimi's MySpace page. He doesn't have it up at MySpace any longer, but I did find it again at his Reverbnation profile. The lyric is from that song, and you can see the source image in the C&S Jimi Gallery.
(created November 2007) Okay, if you can't figure out why I slapped this particular lyric on this particular picture, you're beyond help.
(created March 2008) I don't recall exactly now, but I think I created this manip after hearing the song "Alive" somewhere online in advance of the release of Jimi's Crossroads Moment album, which didn't come out until November of that year. The original photo came from his albums at MySpace--and who could blame me for swiping a copy for my own use? Talk about a drool-worthy shot of him... SIGH... (Alas, the manip itself didn't turn out quite as well as I'd hoped--it was really hard to find a text color that worked on the background.)
(created September 2008) I believe I created this manip after hearing the advance copy of "Behind The Music" which showed up on one of the Rock The Bones compilation CDs from Frontiers Records before Crossroads Moment came out. The lyric is from that song, and the source image can be seen in the C&S Jimi Gallery.
(created October 2008) I was moved to create this manip after Jimi put up a few songs from Crossroads Moment on MySpace a few weeks before the CD was released--"That's Why I Sing" was among them, and it pretty much became an instant favorite. The photo is technically from the liner notes of the CD, but I believe I first saw (and saved) it from this interview. (And I offer my apologies to Jim Peterik for erasing him out of the shot, but I needed space to put the lyric, and he was in the way...)
(created December 2008) I found myself inspired to create this manip after listening to "Bittersweet" on Crossroads Moment a few more times than any sane human being probably should.
(created October 2010) This manip was born purely from seeing the source photo on Jimi's Reverbnation profile--I can't seem to link to the photo directly, but as of this writing it's right at the top of the listing in his photo gallery there. The pose and everything just cried out to have a lyric slapped on it, and the choice of which one to use was pretty darn obvious, too. (It's from "I Can't Hold Back" on Vital Signs.)

Before & After
The following manip was both made and posted with permission from the pic's original photographer and copyright holder, Sally Irwin (who also happens to run Jimi's official website). She took it at a show in Minnesota in October of 2009 and posted it in her albums at MySpace, and almost as soon as I saw it, the idea for this manip popped into my head. I asked her if it was okay if I tinkered with it, and she pretty much gave me carte blanche, and seemed to be quite happy with the end result, too. In fact, when I went to the show in Glyndon in September of 2010, I was shocked (if delighted) to find she'd had 8x10 prints made of my manip and was selling them at the merchandise table alongside official site t-shirts and copies of Jimi's CDs! So, here is the original photo, followed by my altered version--the lyric is from the song "As Is" on Crossroads Moment.

I suppose this technically isn't a manip, as such, but it doesn't really fit in any of the other Jimi galleries at C&S, either, so here it goes.
